Getting Around La Ceiba: Taxis, Shuttles, and Rental Cars

La Ceiba’s downtown core is compact enough to walk, but almost everything that makes this stretch of Honduras’s Caribbean coast worth visiting — Pico Bonito National Park, the Cangrejal River, Cuero y Salado, the beaches east and west of the city — sits outside that walkable core. Here is a practical rundown of how guests usually get around.

Taxis

Taxis are the easiest way to get around town and to nearby attractions on short notice. Most do not run meters, so it is normal to agree on a price before you get in. Our front desk can help you find a reliable driver or give you a rough sense of what a fair fare looks like for your destination.

Shuttles for Longer Routes

For fixed longer-distance routes — onward to other parts of Honduras, or across the border — a shuttle is usually more comfortable and predictable than public buses. Renting a Car

If you would rather set your own schedule — an early start for Cuero y Salado’s first rail car, a full day out to Tela and Lancetilla, or just the freedom to stop wherever looks interesting along the coast — a rental car is the most flexible option. Which Should You Choose?

For most of what is covered on this blog — Sambo Creek, Cuero y Salado, Pico Bonito, a day trip to Tela — a rental car gives you the most flexibility, especially if you are combining more than one stop in a day. If you are heading further afield, into Nicaragua, El Salvador, or Guatemala, a shuttle is usually the more comfortable choice. And for anything in town, a taxi is simplest.
