The La Ceiba Ferry Terminal

The ferry port is just outside the city center, about 10–15 minutes by taxi from most hotels, including ours, and around 15–20 minutes from Golosón International Airport. It is well signposted, with ticket offices and a waiting area, but facilities are basic — plan to arrive at least an hour before your departure, earlier during peak season (Semana Santa, Christmas, and the summer months).

La Ceiba to Roatán

Two ferry companies run this route, Galaxy Wave Ferry and Utila Dream Ferry (also operating as Safe Way Maritime), with a combined total of two to four sailings a day. The crossing takes roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, and one-way fares typically run somewhere between $25 and $45 depending on the operator, class, and season — first-class tickets usually add a VIP waiting area and a more comfortable cabin. Departures are commonly scheduled around mid-morning and mid-afternoon, but times shift by season, so it is worth confirming the current schedule the day before you travel.

La Ceiba to Utila

The Utila crossing is shorter, around 1 hour, and is generally run by Utila Dream Ferry / Safe Way Maritime with at least one sailing most days. Fares run in a similar range to the Roatán route, with a lower-cost regular class and a first-class option. Utila is also connected to Roatán by a separate, shorter ferry if you are planning to island-hop rather than come back through La Ceiba.

A Few Practical Tips

• Book ahead in high season. Seats can sell out around Semana Santa, Christmas, and other holidays.
• Prices and schedules change seasonally. Treat any specific time or fare you read online, including here, as a starting point and confirm before you travel.
• Pack for a bit of motion. The crossing can be choppy depending on conditions; if you are prone to seasickness, plan accordingly.
• You can also fly. Golosón Airport has short domestic flights to both islands if you would rather skip the boat entirely.

About 30 km west of La Ceiba, where the Cuero and Salado Rivers meet the Caribbean, sits one of Honduras’ oldest protected areas: the Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge. Cuero y Salado was once part of the Standard Fruit Company’s banana operations, and the old railroad is still the way in. From the village of La Union, a small rail car carries visitors roughly 30–40 minutes through mangroves and old plantation land to the visitor center at Salado Barra, right at the edge of the refuge. It is a slow, rattling ride, and part of the charm of the trip.

What You Will See

Once inside the refuge, most tours continue by small motorboat or canoe through the estuary and mangrove canals. The reserve protects around 25,000 acres of wetlands, and the wildlife reflects it:

• Caribbean manatees — the refuge’s signature species, shy and most active at dawn or dusk.

Honduras Caribbean coast is Garifuna territory, and La Ceiba sits right in the middle of it. A Short History of the Garifuna

The Garifuna people trace their roots to a shipwreck off the island of Saint Vincent, where enslaved Africans being transported to the Americas mixed with the local Carib and Arawak population. The British eventually exiled the community to the island of Roatán in 1797, and from there the Garifuna spread along the Caribbean coast of Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, and Nicaragua — founding dozens of communities that still exist today, including Corozal and Sambo Creek near La Ceiba.

In 2001, UNESCO recognized Garifuna language, dance, and music — including the famous Punta — as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Visiting either village is a genuine chance to experience that culture firsthand, not a staged performance for tourists.

Corozal

Corozal is the closer of the two villages, about 7–8 km east of La Ceiba on the highway toward Trujillo, home to roughly 4,000 people. Its “tourist zone” has some of the nicest beaches on this stretch of coast, with views out toward Cayos Cochinos on a clear day. For food, Chamorro’s and Arenas are the well-known Garifuna and seafood spots, while Chef Tery, a bit further down the beach, serves a more international menu and is popular with long-time expats in the area. If your visit lines up with January, Corozal’s local fair honoring the Lord of Esquipulas is worth building a trip around.

Sambo Creek

Continue about 15 km east and you will reach Sambo Creek, a livelier beach village with white sand and a warm, welcoming feel. Kabasa and Kays Place are the go-to restaurants for Garifuna seafood here. What to Try

Just east of La Ceiba, past the Garifuna village of Sambo Creek, a small unmarked turnoff leads up into the mountains of Nombre de Dios National Park. Follow it far enough and the jungle opens up into natural thermal pools, waterfalls, and one of the longest zip-line canopy tours on the north coast. It is one of those spots that does not show up in most guidebooks, but locals and long-time visitors to La Ceiba consider it a must.

Glenda’s Paradise Hot Springs

Glenda’s Paradise is the best-known hot springs in the La Ceiba area, and for good reason. Natural thermal water flows down the mountainside at around 105°F (40°C), collecting in stone-lined pools shaded by moss-covered boulders and a small champa roof. There is also a cooler pool nearby if you want to alternate between hot and cold, plus a picnic area with hammocks and a small stand selling food and drinks.

The setting is simple and unpolished, which is part of the appeal — you are soaking in genuinely natural pools in the middle of the rainforest, not a resort spa. Bring a swimsuit, a towel, and some cash for the entrance fee and snacks.

Sambo Creek Canopy Tour

A short distance past the hot springs, a separate entrance leads to the Sambo Creek canopy tour — a zip-line course strung across multiple cables through the treetops, with the longest run stretching roughly half a mile. It is a genuine adrenaline rush with real jungle views, and most visitors pair it with the hot springs to make a full day of it: zip-line first, then soak your legs afterward.

Sambo Creek Itself
